Definition:

  • ‍Cosmetic surgery is performed to correct a physical abnormality or to enhance an otherwise normal physical feature and thus improve appearance. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery stated " Cosmetic surgery is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach directed to all areas of the head, neck and body".

  • ‍Cosmetic surgery also known as plastic surgery has been around the world for at least 4,000 years, from India to Iran. It finally became popular in the United States in the late nineteenth century after World War I, due to the multitude of injuries that our soldiers had endured.

The first surgery in the United States was performed by Dr. John Pete Mettaur in 1827 for a cleft palate using instruments that he designed. (A board certified plastic surgeon resource, 2011, History)
