Background of Technology

Definition:Online Social Networking is web-based services that is performed completely on the World Wide Web, connecting friends, students, teachers, and professionals together. Programs such as FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace are a huge part of the online social networking scene that connects all these users together to engage together and that revolutionized the online social networking phenomenon as we know it today (Boyd & Ellison, 2011).

The reason online social networking sites were developed is because there are millions of users that use the internet daily, and these social networking sites strategically placed themselves to where it reaches these users on a daily bases and attract them to their sites. Face Book and MySpace started this phenomenon in 2003 of online social networking, connecting millions of users from friends to working professionals. It can be seen from the beginning of the online social networking era to where it is now has drastically changed and the popularity of these sites are growing in all aspects that support development of this phenomenon(Boyd & Ellison, 2011).

Reason 1: Increasing use of Internet Users
Historically, online social networking was begun in 1997 with However, other sites started to come up like LinkedIn and but the traffic of internet users back then was not as massive as it is today. Internet users in the 1990s only used the internet for basic reasons work and school,
not many online social networking sites worked back then because of privacy reasons and for features that were used was not attractive enough to users(Boyd & Ellison, 2011). In 2000, there was a huge increase in internet users and that’s when these social sites launched MySpace and Face Book and met the demands of their
users and because of these reasons there has been an increase in social networking sites even though MySpace is not as major as it was back then Face Book took over the social networking scene by storm and has over 90 million users and still growing(Gneiser, Heidemann, Klier & Weib, 2011).

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Reason 2:Increase in wireless internet
‍‍‍‍‍As technology evolved so did FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, and Skype. FaceBook, Twitter, and Skype changed and advanced their features in technologies that were available like video-viewing, phone-conferencing, web-cam technologies, and live game chats games. Now you can use wireless internet more than ever before on your mobile phone, smartphone, ipad, etc.. Now you can use these online social networking sites on the run. For example, let's say someone is heading somewhere in their car and has a designated driver they use their phones and technological devices and update their status and where they are located. The creation of the wireless internet gave us the increase use of these social networking sites and as we move forward into the future, we will see new ways of using the internet that will make it even more convenient to use these sites. (Brown 2011 & Goldsborough 2010).
